Reference · the year and Tai Sui

Four sectors move every year.

Most of a reading does not change. The house faces where it faced, the door is where it was, the bed has a wall behind it or it has not. Four sectors move, and the almanac names them: where the year sits, where it breaks, where its three killings fall, and which palace the five yellow reaches.

Everything on this page is computed from the cycle rather than copied from a table, which is the only way to publish it honestly: a transcribed table carries its manual’s errors and stops at the year the manual was printed. The rules are the Compass schools’ standard ones — the twelve animals essay explains the branches and the trines, Flying Stars the annual star, and choosing a day what the almanac actually asks of a household. The sectors are read on the twenty-four mountains, never on the eight.

What the rule asks is narrow, and worth keeping narrow. The almanac tells a household not to break ground in these sectors — not to dig, demolish, knock through or begin building work in them, and not to sit with its back to the Tai Sui while doing so. It does not say a bed may not stand there, or that a room in that quarter is unlucky for the year. A reading that moves the furniture for the annual sectors has read the rule as something it does not say; a household that keeps the digging out of them for twelve months has done what it asks.

A year on this page begins at the spring festival, on the third, fourth or fifth of February, and not on the first of January: a birth or a move in late January belongs to the animal before. The stem and branch are the sexagenary pair, 甲子 to 癸亥, running from the year 4 of the common era; the annual star is eleven less the year’s digits reduced to one figure, and the five yellow is where the five lands when that star is flown from the centre in the Lo Shu order.
