Northeast

The mountain: the still point before dawn, where the year has not yet turned. A direction for study, for the quiet room, for anything that benefits from being left alone.

In the tradition

Gen is the mountain, a solid line resting on two broken ones: weight held above an open base, the image of stillness. It sits between the deep winter of north and the spring of east, the hour before dawn when nothing moves yet. Its family member is the youngest son and its virtue is knowing when to stop.

The later bagua map assigned this sector to knowledge and self-cultivation, an inference from the trigram’s stillness rather than a classical instruction.

In the room

Northeast light is early and brief: a low sun at daybreak in the warmer months, then shade. The direction suits a study, a reading corner, a library, a guest room. Earth is its element, so the tradition furnishes it with the square, the low and the matte, with books, stone and ceramics rather than glass and steel.

A geometric model, not a forecast: it assumes a clear sky and a flat horizon at 45° north, and it says nothing about qi. It is here because orientation is the one part of the tradition that can be drawn exactly.

The sun-path drawing and the hours of light are computed from a geometric model at 45° north (see the methodology page), not taken from any source; the directions' trigrams, elements and readings are the tradition's, as the manuals above give them.
